Toyota has officially unveiled the brand-new RAV4 in Japan – marking the world premiere of the sixth-generation RAV4. Under the theme “Life is an Adventure”, the all-new RAV4 has been reimagined for those who want to live life to the fullest. It now boasts new powerful hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems, improved acceleration, and cutting-edge technology designed to make every drive easier and more connected.

Power through Electrification

The new RAV4 comes in both Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) models. The PHEV features Toyota’s latest sixth-generation hybrid system, with a new high-output charger and a more efficient battery setup. The result is a much-improved battery-only driving range that is now up to 150km (up from 95km).

Toyota has also focused on improving the off-road performance of the PHEV variant. With 12% more motor output, you can expect a more exhilarating drive that doesn’t compromise on efficiency. Even better, it now includes vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability, meaning it can serve as a backup power source during outages or outdoor trips. And with DC fast charging, you can juice it up to 80% in just 30 minutes.

The HEV version also sees key upgrades. Enhanced components, including a better transaxle and power control unit, mean quicker take-off and a more agile response – especially handy for city traffic or overtaking on the highway.

Bold New Design

The new RAV4 design is based on three design elements: (1) “Big Foot” (an emphasis on large-diameter tires), (2) “Life-up” (a reminder of excellent off-road performance), and (3) “Utility” (an easy-to-use cargo space). These three elements express the unique “RAV4-ness” of a car that feels like it can go anywhere.

Inside, it’s all about functionality and comfort. The dashboard has been lowered by about 40mm, improving forward visibility. The infotainment system supports enhanced smartphone connectivity, and the cabin includes clever storage solutions, including a reversible centre console that works as both an armrest and a tray.

A standout interior feature is the “island architecture” layout – grouping controls like the gearshift, display screens and air vents together for less eye movement and better ergonomics while driving. The boot space has also been increased to 749 litres (733 litres in current generation), and folding the rear seats flat gives you even more room for long items.

Three Distinct Styles

Toyota is offering the new RAV4 in three styling options:

  • CORE – This is the urban hero, with a sleek, refined design and a solid presence. Think hammerhead-inspired front-end styling with a modern twist.
  • ADVENTURE – For those who live to explore, this version brings a rugged, off-road-ready look, with bold grille design, wide stance, and reinforced wheel arch mouldings.
  • GR SPORT – Developed using Toyota’s motorsport know-how, the GR SPORT is the most athletic of the bunch. It’s got specially tuned suspension, sporty bumpers and wheels, and a wider track for better handling — whether you’re on the open road or carving through the hills.

Smarter Than Ever

What truly sets this RAV4 apart is its intelligence. Toyota has introduced its new Arene software platform for the first time, developed by Woven by Toyota. This signals the start of Toyota’s shift into the world of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) — cars that grow smarter with every update.

The RAV4’s new multimedia system offers a customisable home screen and much faster voice recognition, making everyday interactions smoother and more personal. It also comes with the latest Toyota Safety Sense package, featuring key upgrades like the Emergency Driving Stop System (which safely pulls the car over if the driver becomes unresponsive) and enhanced acceleration control to prevent sudden unintended movements.

Looking ahead, Toyota plans to continually update safety features and user experiences over-the-air, ensuring the new RAV4 stays ahead of the curve for years to come.

Toyota will be rolling out the new RAV4 in more than 180 countries – including South Africa. However, details relating to local specification will be communicated closer to launch timing.
