ISUZU Motors South Africa is introducing the latest evolution of the MU-X, an adventurous sport utility vehicle (SUV) that blends impressive capability with premium comfort and cutting-edge design. Enhanced inside and out, the 2025 model line-up raises the bar with improved styling, upgraded technology and safety, and refined driving dynamics. The range is also being bolstered with the addition of a new flagship model, the 3.0-litre 4×4 ONYX XT, which adds an extra layer of exclusivity to the line-up.

MU-X’s key strengths have always been its style, its levels of comfort, convenience and luxury, its active and passive safety features, and the fuel efficiency and rugged reliability of its Isuzu engines. The MY25 MU-X has taken these core selling points onto an even higher level of customer desirability.

“The MY25 ISUZU MU-X builds upon the core strengths of the current model, adding increased levels of luxury, comfort, convenience and active safety, making the MU-X even more appealing to purchasers of a family-sized SUV,” says Kevin Fouché, Department Executive, Product Planning, ISUZU Motors South Africa.

Striking Exterior Enhancements

The exterior styling concept of the MY25 MU-X presents a bold and dynamic image that enhances MU-X’s reputation as a true luxury multi-purpose vehicle.

The front end has been completely reimagined with a new bumper, restyled grille, redesigned ISUZU badge, and a sharper, more aggressive headlamp cluster. These LED headlamps, featuring bi-beam technology, LED daytime running lights and repositioned fog lamps enhance visibility while adding a futuristic edge.

At the rear, updates include a revised bumper, a new tailgate design, the introduction of a mid-level spoiler, and new badging. The advanced new combination LED taillights are now linked by a distinctive tailgate garnish that reinforces the athletic flair of the MU-X.

New wheel designs further enhance the new MU-X’s visual appeal, with robust 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels for the LS and LSE models and striking 20-inch wheels on the all-new ONYX XT. Additional colour accents on key exterior elements distinguish the MU-X from the crowd, while two fresh paint options – Eiger Grey Metallic and Biarritz Blue – expand the total colour palette to eight options, giving buyers more personalisation choices.

Refined Interior with Advanced Technology

Inside, the MU-X’s cabin has been meticulously updated to deliver greater sophistication and comfort. The dashboard has been revamped, and new interior colours for the doors and armrests, along with reworked leather seat patterns, elevate the premium feel.

The infotainment system has been upgraded with a high-resolution nine-inch display, featuring a piano black finish, two rotary dials, and five touch-sensitive switches. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility come as standard, with connectivity via USB or wirelessly through Bluetooth.

The LS models retain an analogue reversing camera, while the LSE and ONYX XT gain a new digital 360-degree Surround View Monitor to significantly enhance all-round visibility. The system utilises four strategically placed cameras – front, rear, and on each side mirror – to provide a comprehensive view of the vehicle’s surroundings. This new feature is particularly useful when navigating the urban environment and manoeuvring in tight parking spaces, as well as for traversing technical off-road terrain.

The 360-degree camera system offers multiple selectable viewing angles, including an innovative new underfloor view that allows the driver to accurately guide the vehicle around obstacles, further enhancing 4×4 capability and safety. It also offers a wider field of view with dynamic guidelines for easier manoeuvring, combined with improved brightness and better visibility in low-light conditions.

New Driver-Centric Instrumentation

The MY25 MU-X introduces a redesigned seven-inch multi-information display (MID) within the driver’s instrument cluster. Featuring electroluminescent colours, gold graphics, and a newly sculpted binnacle, the display provides vital driving information with improved clarity. Traditional analogue dials for the tachometer and fuel gauge remain, alongside an LED temperature gauge, ensuring an intuitive and engaging driving experience.

Enhanced Convenience and Safety

Everyday practicality and convenience features added to the latest MU-X range include a customisable welcome function, where unlocking the vehicle remotely illuminates the low beam and parking lamps. The duration of this function can be extended by pressing the unlock button again, and it can be disabled via the vehicle’s customisation settings. The suspension has also been revised, with larger diameter shock absorbers providing a smoother, more composed ride across both urban and off-road environments.

Carry-over features from the previous model include the hands-free power tailgate and follow-me-home lighting, which keeps the headlights and park lights illuminated for 30 seconds after locking the vehicle, adding an extra layer of security and convenience.

Introducing the ONYX XT – The New Flagship

The all-new ONYX XT takes the MU-X’s rugged elegance to the next level. Designed for those who seek individuality, this exclusive 3.0-litre 4×4 model features a range of distinctive design elements, including a gloss black grille finish, metallic Light Magnetite bumper, gloss black roof rails, and ONYX black side mirrors. Gloss black door mouldings, a rear liftgate garnish, and metallic Light Magnetite accent panels below the bumper add further visual impact. Unique XT badging on the grille and bodywork further enhances the ONYX XT’s striking appearance.

This new range-topping model stands out further thanks to its bespoke 20-inch gloss black five-element alloy wheels with a smoky clear coating, along with a range of four exclusive colours: Eiger Grey Metallic, Dolomite White Pearl, Onyx Black Mica, and Mercury Silver Metallic.

Inside, the ONYX XT exudes a premium yet sporty feel, featuring exclusive red ambient lighting on the dashboard and doors, complemented by white footwell and overhead console illumination. The leather seats are accented with red stitching, and the steering wheel features a piano black finish with a metallic lower centre ornament.

The infotainment system remains a nine-inch unit with the same high-end connectivity features, but the ONYX XT benefits from additional USB Type-C ports, positioned below the ventilation control panel and in the rear of the centre console to provide power for rear seat passengers, for added convenience. The driver’s MID features unique XT graphics with red accents, further distinguishing this top-tier model from the rest of the MU-X range.

Power Meets Efficiency

The ISUZU MU-X remains available with two powerful and efficient turbodiesel engines, catering to different driving needs. The proven 3.0-litre engine, which is available in LS, LSE and ONYX XT specification, delivers 140 kW and 450 Nm of torque, providing strong performance both on- and off-road. For those seeking a balance between power and economy, the 1.9-litre variant – available on the entry-level LS model – offers 110 kW and 350 Nm, with a commendable fuel consumption of just 7.0 litres per 100 km. Both engine options are paired with six-speed automatic transmissions, ensuring smooth and responsive driving. The 1.9-litre is available in 4×2, while the 3.0-litre is offered in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations, with a diff-lock and low-range transfer case on the 4×4 variants. Whether tackling city streets or venturing into the unknown, the MU-X delivers refined, confident performance.

Built for the Journey Ahead

The 2025 ISUZU MU-X continues to set the benchmark for SUVs that deliver versatility, refinement, reliability, and adventure-ready performance. Whether navigating city streets, tackling rugged off-road trails, or embarking on long-distance road trips, the MU-X ensures every journey is completed in comfort and style. With an expanded model range, enhanced technology, and a refined design, the new MU-X is built to get you there.
