Must-know road trip tips from WesBank

With school holidays underway and the Easter weekend fast approaching, many South Africans are preparing for road trips to reconnect with family and explore new destinations. To help ensure a smooth and stress-free journey, WesBank urges drivers to prioritise safety by planning ahead and making necessary vehicle checks before setting off.

Pre-trip vehicle checklist

A thorough vehicle inspection can help prevent unexpected breakdowns or delays. Before embarking on your trip, check the following:

  • Brakes – Have your brake pads checked for wear and signs of disc warping.
  • Battery – Look for signs of corrosion and ensure it is fully charged.
  • Lights – Test all lights, including headlights, brake lights, and indicators.
  • Tyres – Check pressure and tread depth on all tyres, including the spare.
  • Windscreen wipers – Replace if worn out to ensure clear visibility in adverse weather.
  • Fluids – Verify engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid levels.

“Poor maintenance, particularly that of brakes and tyres, is often cited as one of the leading factors that contribute to fatal road crashes in South Africa,” states Lebo Gaoaketse, Head of Marketing and Communication at WesBank. “Unfortunately, due to strained household budgets, many vehicle owners delay the required maintenance in these crucial areas. To aid our customers, WesBank, through its WShop, allows qualifying customers to buy a voucher for selected vehicle add-ons and simply add the cost to their contract and pay it off over the remaining loan term at the same interest rate, taking the pressure off their wallet.”

Safe driving habits

A seatbelt is your first line of defence in case of an accident—ensure that everyone in the car is buckled up at all times. It is also crucial to maintain a safe following distance, adhere to speed limits, and obey all road regulations to keep yourself and others safe.

The dangers of driving under the influence

Driving while under the influence remains a major contributor to road fatalities in South Africa. According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), alcohol-related incidents account for roughly 27.1% of fatal vehicle crashes. The National Road Traffic Act (NRTA) classifies driving under the influence as a criminal offence, carrying serious consequences such as fines, licence suspension, or imprisonment. To stay safe and avoid legal repercussions, always arrange for a designated driver or opt for alternative transport if you plan on drinking.

Important documents and emergency contacts

Beyond vehicle readiness, having the right paperwork is essential. Ensure your driving licence and vehicle licence disc are valid. In addition, store emergency contact numbers, such as SAPS, ambulance services, your insurance provider, and a trusted family member, in an easily accessible location.

Cross-border travel requirements

If your trip takes you beyond South Africa’s borders, be aware of the necessary documentation:

  • Certified copies of your vehicle’s registration or licence papers.
  • A border letter from your financing bank, if the vehicle is financed. WesBank customers can conveniently obtain this document via the online self-service portal.
  • Additional paperwork if the driver is not the vehicle’s owner, including a police affidavit and a letter of authority from the registered owner.
  • Rental car documentation permitting international travel, if applicable.

To make the process more convenient, WesBank has loaded key vehicle-related documents, such as NaTIS copies and border letters, to its digital platforms, including the WesBank Online (WOL) portal and the WesBank mobile app. Customers can securely access these documents at any time, along with additional paperwork like settlement letters, statements, tax certificates, and copies of their vehicle finance contracts.

Verify your insurance cover

Confirm with your insurer whether your comprehensive policy extends to cross-border travel. If not, consider arranging additional cover to avoid potential financial risks in case of theft or an accident outside South Africa.

Stay prepared and enjoy your journey

“Taking proactive steps, such as vehicle checks, confirming your documents, and verifying your insurance coverage, ensures a hassle-free road trip. With proper planning, you can focus on enjoying your time with loved ones while staying safe on the road,” says Gaoaketse. “By following these essential tips, you can embark on your journey with confidence and peace of mind. “WesBank wishes you a safe and pleasant trip.”
