Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced that starting with Formula E Season 10, it will adopt ” Brain to Performance, ” which brings out the potential of the brain, in its driver training program. .

Nissan launched this program in 2017 with the aim of clarifying the brain functions of professional drivers from an anatomical perspective . Previous research has shown that by improving brain and cognitive functions related to driving and racing, drivers can reduce mistakes and improve reaction speed while maintaining stable performance. In addition, by undergoing continuous training, drivers will be able to maximize their brain potential, which will help them maintain calm and improve their judgment in high-pressure situations.

Research contents so far

At the end of Season 7, the Nissan Formula E team, together with Lucian Gjorge, Nissan’s senior manager in charge of UX innovation, will compare the brain functions of racing drivers and regular drivers, and improve performance on the circuit by electrically stimulating the brain. announced that it would conduct research in three areas: improving the driving skills of ordinary drivers.

In Season 8, we conducted tests using race simulators from the University of Essex and Campus Biotech. In a test in which ordinary drivers drove a course for the first time 10 times, it was clear that the group that received brain stimulation drove in half the time and memorized the course in half the time compared to the group that did not receive brain stimulation. became.

Based on these results, Görge, with support from US technology partners Wave Neuro and the University of Texas at Austin, created a training program using the Sonal device, which stimulates specific areas of the brain. As a result of conducting this training over the course of Season 9, it was concluded that it was possible to improve drivers’ cognitive functions and optimize their performance.

Based on these results, the Nissan Formula E Team plans to incorporate this program into driver training starting in Season 10.

ommaso Volpe, general manager of Nissan Formula E and managing director of the Nissan Formula E team, said: “In the spirit of ‘doing what others don’t do’, over the past three seasons we have partnered with professional drivers and the general public. We have been researching the differences in the driver’s brain. We are looking forward to seeing how the drivers and the entire Nissan team will evolve as the Nissan Formula E team adopts the “Brain to Performance” program from Season 10. We are doing so.”

“From the beginning of our Brain to Performance program, we were confident in the potential of this technology to improve driver performance,” said Gyorge. “We are grateful to all our partners who have supported our research to date, and look forward to further developments in the future.” I did.

Nissan aims to leverage its experience in Formula E and the knowledge and technology gained from production cars to provide customers with even better electric vehicles.
