The MasterDrive Driver Search (MDDS) competition entered its next phase ahead of the Simola Hillclimb. Recently, the entrants were whittled down to the top five contestants before the final winner was selected for the passion and potential demonstrated, which will prove essential as they turn their motorsport dreams into reality.
What sets this year’s MDDS apart is the remarkable enthusiasm demonstrated by all participants. The CEO of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, says: “In particular, the top five demonstrated passion that extends far beyond simply wanting to be a driver for a day at Simola Hillclimb.
“Instead, they are fully committed to embracing the entire motorsport journey. Each one of the top five fully understood that winning the competition is a first step in building a potential motorsport career. It highlights their understanding that success in motorsport requires more than just skill behind the wheel but also absolute commitment and dedication,” says Herbert.
The final elimination round
The General Manager of Coastal Regions at MasterDrive, Eugene ‘Gino’ Nourse, says last week the final, rigorous evaluation took place. “It was designed to push the top five to their limits. It included a multi-faceted challenge made up of karting, simulated racing challenges and Gymkhana trials.

“Contestants also participated in a high-stakes panel interview with industry experts. The interview panel features some of the most respected names in motorsport including professionals from MasterDrive and Race Driver South Africa (RDSA), among other distinguished industry figures.”
MDDS is not just about raw driving talent. “Key attributes set contestants apart included their clear determination, a willingness to learn, demonstration of a practical mindset combined with an ability to be hands-on. These qualities will be crucial as the winner represents the team at the prestigious Simola Hillclimb event.
“The data collected during the final elimination round was not only essential to select the winner but will be pivotal in shaping the subsequent training sessions. This comprehensive and dynamic assessment process ensures the selection of an appropriate winner and an opportunity to gain knowledge on how to bring out the best in the final driver.”
After the intense elimination rounds, Tarique Zietsman emerged as the MasterDrive Driver Search winner for 2025. “Tarique earned his spot and will now undergo the specialised training to take on the Simola Hillclimb.
“MasterDrive congratulates Tarique on this outstanding achievement. We look forward to being a part of his journey as Tarique prepares to push himself to the limits and showcase his dedication and driving aptitude on the hill,” says Nourse.
