The penultimate round of the 2024 South African Touring Car Championship (SATC) is set to take place this weekend at the historic Killarney Raceway in Cape Town. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa (TGRSA) will be looking to continue their strong performance with drivers Michael van Rooyen, Saood Variawa and Nathi Msimanga, each piloting their SATC GR Corollas. Sa’aad Variawa will be representing TGRSA in the SupaCup Championship behind the wheel of the SupaStarlet.
With only two rounds remaining in the 7-round championship, the battle for the SATC title is heating up. Robert Wolk (BMW) currently leads the standings with 127 points, followed by TGRSA’s Michael van Rooyen, who is just 25 points behind on 102 points. Julian van der Watt (VW) is in third with 91 points, while Anthony Pretorius is close behind in fourth with 90 points. Saood Variawa holds fifth place with 82 points, and Nathi Msimanga is in sixth with 69 points.
The Killarney Raceway, known for its fast straights and technical corners, will provide a challenging stage for the drivers as they battle for valuable championship points. TGRSA will be aiming to close the gap in the overall standings, with Michael van Rooyen and the team eyeing a strong finish to keep their title hopes alive.
In the SupaCup Championship, Sa’aad Variawa will continue his campaign in the TGRSA SupaStarlet. The young driver has shown promise in his debut season, overcoming technical challenges and on-track incidents. As he heads into the penultimate round, Sa’aad will be aiming for consistent results and a strong performance at Killarney to boost his position in the standings.
The Killarney Speed Festival will kick off with practice sessions on Friday, followed by Qualifying and two race heats on Saturday. The SATC and SupaCup races will run simultaneously, sharing the circuit and providing plenty of racing action for fans.
With the championship still up for grabs and the pressure mounting, this weekend’s racing promises to deliver thrilling battles as TGRSA pushes for maximum points.
