Lexus South Africa has unveiled the all-new RZ – the brand’s first globally available, purpose-built battery electric vehicle (BEV) and a defining milestone in its evolution toward a fully electrified future.

More than a new model introduction, the RZ represents both a structural and philosophical shift for Lexus. Electrification is no longer positioned as an alternative powertrain; it now forms the very foundation of the Lexus driving experience, shaping everything from platform architecture to driver engagement.

Since pioneering local luxury electrification with the RX Hybrid in 2008, Lexus SA has consistently paired environmental responsibility with refinement and dynamic poise. This journey expanded further with the local introduction of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) in 2023, reinforcing the brand’s multi-pathway strategy toward carbon neutrality.

The RZ marks the next decisive step – a dedicated BEV engineered from inception to deliver seamless performance, innovation and the signature serenity that defines Lexus worldwide.

A PLATFORM DESIGNED FOR ELECTRIFICATION

Unlike adapted internal combustion platforms, the RZ has been conceived from the ground up around a dedicated electric architecture. Electrification therefore influences every aspect of the vehicle – from proportions and packaging to structural rigidity, weight distribution and dynamic balance.

With the flexibility offered by its dedicated electric architecture, designers were able to craft seamless, aerodynamic proportions that express the immediacy and purity inherent to electric driving.

The evolved spindle body concept expresses athleticism and planted stability while maintaining unmistakable Lexus identity. Clean surfacing and balanced proportions define the RZ 500e EX and SE, supported by subtle aerodynamic refinements that reduce drag while enhancing both efficiency and high-speed composure.

The RZ 550e F SPORT intensifies this visual language with functional performance elements, including sculpted air ducts that guide cooling air toward the brake calipers, fin-shaped bumper mouldings that carefully manage airflow along the flanks, and a rear spoiler with diffuser treatment that reinforces aerodynamic stability and dynamic intent.

Later this year, the RZ 600e F SPORT Performance will extend this philosophy further with extensive carbon fibre components and advanced aerodynamic treatments engineered not only for visual drama, but for measurable downforce and high-speed stability.

THREE GRADES, ONE COHESIVE STRATEGY

The local RZ range has been carefully structured to provide a clear and deliberate progression within the premium electric SUV segment:

  • RZ 500e EX
  • RZ 500e SE
  • RZ 550e F SPORT
  • RZ 600e F SPORT Performance (arriving later)

All derivatives feature DIRECT4 intelligent all-wheel drive as standard, ensuring confident traction, intuitive torque distribution and reassuring composure across varied South African driving conditions.

The RZ 500e EX establishes the foundation with generous specification levels and compelling performance credentials. The RZ 500e SE elevates material execution, advanced technology integration and comfort innovation to create a more immersive luxury experience.

At the apex of the current range, the RZ 550e F SPORT introduces a sharper, more emotionally engaging character through advanced chassis technologies and distinctive performance design elements. The forthcoming RZ 600e F SPORT Performance will serve as the halo derivative, pushing electrified capability and aerodynamic sophistication to new heights.

Together, the grades form a deliberate customer journey – from refined electric luxury to performance-focused electrified expression – without departing from Lexus’ core values of craftsmanship, comfort and composure.

INTERIOR DESIGN: HUMAN-CENTRED INNOVATION

Inside, the RZ introduces a progressive yet calming cabin shaped by Lexus’ Tazuna concept – a human-centred philosophy that creates a direct and intuitive connection between driver and vehicle. Primary controls, displays and key interfaces are positioned within the driver’s natural line of sight and reach, minimising distraction while enhancing confidence and engagement.

A dial-type shift-by-wire system replaces the conventional gear selector with rotary control, reinforcing the vehicle’s progressive identity. Customisable multi-colour ambient illumination casts layered shadow patterns across the cabin, adding visual depth and a heightened sense of modern sophistication.

Interior Materials by Grade

  • RZ 500e EX features premium synthetic leather upholstery, available in Hazel or Grayscale themes, delivering both durability and contemporary refinement.
  • RZ 500e SE upgrades to patterned Ultrasuede trim, offering enhanced tactile quality and a more luxurious visual presentation.
  • RZ 550e F SPORT introduces sport front seats in Black and Dark Grey Ultrasuede, providing enhanced lateral support to complement its dynamic focus.
  • RZ 600e F SPORT Performance will feature exclusive Black Ultrasuede sport seats with distinctive patterned detailing and performance-oriented accents.

Comfort innovation is central to the RZ experience. Lexus-first radiant heaters, integrated into the climate control system, utilise infrared panels positioned ahead of the driver and front passenger. By warming solid surfaces directly, the system heats occupants more quickly while consuming approximately 8% less energy than conventional heating systems – improving both comfort and efficiency.

In SE and F SPORT derivatives, the interior environment is further elevated through the inclusion of a 14-inch Full HD multimedia display that serves as the central interface for navigation, connectivity and vehicle settings, alongside a 13-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system engineered for concert-quality sound reproduction.

A Head-Up Display projects key driving information into the driver’s line of sight, while a digital rear-view mirror enhances rearward visibility in varying light and weather conditions.

Additional convenience features include a wireless charging pad, full Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a dimming panoramic roof that transitions between transparency and privacy at the touch of a button. Heated front and rear seats, working in conjunction with the radiant heating system, further reinforce the vehicle’s commitment to passenger comfort.

The result is an interior that balances advanced technology with craftsmanship and serenity.

ENHANCED ELECTRIC PERFORMANCE

At the heart of the RZ lies a revised BEV system built around a 74.6 kWh (in EX and SE grades) and 76.9 kWh (in F SPORT) lithium-ion battery paired with re-engineered eAxles designed to reduce internal losses while delivering stronger, more immediate torque response.

Power Outputs:

  • RZ 500e EX & SE deliver a combined output of 280 kW, offering brisk acceleration with refined composure.
  • RZ 550e F SPORT raises output to 300 kW, unlocking sharper responses and heightened dynamic capability.

A newly developed water-cooling system maintains stable battery temperatures during repeated acceleration, sustained highway driving or rapid charging, preserving durability and performance consistency over time. All derivatives are rated to tow up to 750kg, reinforcing everyday practicality for South African lifestyles that demand versatility.

FASTER, MORE INTELLIGENT CHARGING

A 22 kW onboard charger is standard across the range, allowing the RZ to fully leverage expanding public and private charging infrastructure.

Battery pre-conditioning technology ensures the battery reaches optimal temperature before charging begins, significantly improving efficiency in colder conditions. When activated, a 10–80% charge can be achieved in approximately 30 minutes under low-temperature scenarios.

The system activates automatically when a charging station is set as a navigation destination or can be manually engaged via the multimedia interface, ensuring seamless daily usability.

GRADEWALK

RZ 500e EX: The RZ 500e EX rides on 18-inch alloy wheels fitted with 235/60R18 tyres, carefully selected to balance ride comfort with confident road presence. Its specification includes synthetic leather interior trim, heated front seats, single LED headlamps with Auto High Beam functionality, a Lexus Premium Audio system with 10 speakers, as well as Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Trace Assist to support long-distance driving confidence.

RZ 500e SE (Adds to EX): Building on this foundation, the RZ 500e SE introduces 20-inch staggered alloy wheels measuring 235/50R20 at the front and 255/45R20 at the rear, enhancing both stance and visual presence. The cabin is upgraded with Ultrasuede interior trim and a panoramic dimming roof that provides adjustable light control and an enhanced sense of space.

Additional features include an Adaptive High Beam System, Head-Up Display, a 13-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system, Intelligent Parking Assist, and heated front and rear seats integrated with the radiant heating system.

RZ 550e F SPORT (Adds to SE)

The RZ 550e F SPORT further distinguishes itself with dedicated F SPORT exterior styling elements that amplify its dynamic presence. Inside, Ultrasuede sport seats provide enhanced lateral support, complemented by aluminium sport pedals and painted brake calipers that reinforce its performance character.

Technological enhancements include Steer-by-Wire technology for finely calibrated steering response, an Interactive Manual Drive system that simulates an eight-speed transmission for greater engagement, and performance dampers tuned to sharpen body control and cornering precision.

RZ 600e F SPORT Performance (Arriving Later)

  • 21-inch staggered alloy wheels designed to maximise grip and visual drama.
  • Carbon fibre roof reducing weight while lowering the centre of gravity.
  • Carbon bonnet vents improving airflow management and thermal efficiency.
  • Advanced aerodynamic package engineered to generate meaningful downforce.
  • Exclusive F SPORT Performance detailing underscoring its halo positioning.
