Celebrating 25 years of the S60: The sedan that took Volvo into the 21st century

VOLVO 60-series (2000 – 2009)
SHARE
  • The first-generation S60 debuted in 2000, introducing Volvo’s new design language, sportier driving dynamics, and cutting-edge safety features.
  • With nearly 600,000 units produced, it became a global success, challenging perceptions of what a Volvo could be.
  • The S60 R set a new benchmark for Volvo performance, a spirit that continues today in the T8 Recharge plug-in hybrids.

2025 is a significant year for the 60 series of the Volvo lineup, with the original S60 sedan celebrating its 25th anniversary. Unveiled in 2000, the svelte, Peter Horbury-designed executive sedan combined Volvo’s signature safety with a more driver-focused appeal, taking the fight to other established European luxury marques.

Over its nine-year production run, the Volvo S60 earned global recognition for its design, safety, and performance, with 581,947 examples produced—proof of its enduring international appeal. From the outset, it challenged perceptions of what a mid-size Volvo sedan could be, blending Scandinavian design, advanced safety technology, and innovation—hallmarks that continue to define the S60 to this day.

When the S60 was launched as a successor to the conservative S70, it marked a significant shift for the automaker, introducing a sportier and more dynamic profile. Designed for drivers who sought more than just comfort and safety, the S60 offered sharper handling, a sleek, coupe-like silhouette, and a range of engine options that strike a balance between power and efficiency.

VOLVO 60-series (2000 – 2009)

Based on the P2 platform—which also underpinned the S80 and, later, the XC90—the S60 was offered exclusively with five-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, which provided it with a distinctive soundtrack and strong performance, especially in the case of the T5, which, in its most powerful guise, produced 191 kW and 350 Nm of torque.

Of course, the S60 would step into its performance stride in 2004 when the R variant was revealed, a worthy successor to the legendary 850 T-5R and 850 R. With 221 kW and 400 N.m of torque, the S60 R was a serious performance car, and a threat to the established rivals. Importantly, it was a show of Volvo’s engineering prowess and its ability to compete in any segment. These days, the spirit of the S60 R still lives on in the S60 T8 Recharge, which delivers 340 kW and 709 N. m of torque, allowing it to hit 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. While the current S60 is not sold in South Africa, its powerful yet efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain features in the popular XC60 and XC90 Recharge models.

The design of the S60 remains influential, and styling elements seen here can still be seen in contemporary Volvos. No cue is quite as distinctive as the beltline, which created a distinctive ledge that extended from the front to the rear. This unique “shoulder” line created an unmistakable shape, with the taillights tapering inward as they follow the curve of the body. This styling treatment, first introduced on the first-generation S80, is evident today in the subtle curve of the XC40, XC60, and XC90 taillights.

Inside, the S60 introduced a clean, driver-oriented cockpit with high-quality materials, intuitive controls, and a focus on occupant wellbeing—hallmarks that still define Volvo interiors today.

VOLVO 60-series (2000 – 2009)

True to Volvo’s core values, safety remained paramount throughout the first-generation S60’s evolution. The model offered a comprehensive suite of protective features, including front and rear crumple zones, a collapsible three-stage steering column, and dual-threshold airbags for the driver and front passenger, which allowed the airbags to deploy at different forces depending on the severity of the collision.

Side impact protection was bolstered by airbags for front occupants and curtain airbags extending to the rear. The cabin also boasted anti-submarine seating and Volvo’s Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS). As a result, the S60 received a four-star rating from Euro NCAP when it was evaluated in 2001, with the safety agency noting the S60 “provides a structurally stable safety cage and is particularly good at protecting its occupants in a side impact,” and noted that “protection for children is well thought out,” further cementing the brand’s stellar safety reputation.

VOLVO 60-series (2000 – 2009)

The 25th anniversary of the S60 is more than a milestone; it is a reflection of Volvo’s journey towards a future shaped by electrification, sustainability, and uncompromising safety. The innovations found on the original S60 continue to influence Volvo’s design and technology philosophy as the brand moves towards an all-electric future.

For those who’ve driven an S60 over the past 25 years, the car represents more than just transport—it’s a symbol of trust, innovation, and a connection to the road that only a Volvo can offer.

“The S60 heralded a new era for the brand, donning a new look for the 21st century without sacrificing the key tenets that make a Volvo a Volvo: safety, innovation, and strong performance,” commented Felipe Yagi, Head of Marketing and Communications and Volvo Car South Africa. “Though the S60 is no longer available locally, the values it introduced remain central to our line-up, especially in models like the XC60. We are proud to celebrate this important anniversary and look forward to continuing to innovate for our customers, as we did all those years ago.”
