JMC RETURNS TO SOUTH AFRICA

Salvador Caetano South Africa has announced the official return of the JMC brand locally, bringing back a marque that has been known and trusted in Mzansi for many years. As the newly appointed importer and distributor of JMC, Salvador Caetano promises a renewed vigour and focus, stronger global and local backing, as well as a clear mission of establishing products which are Built for More.

JMC is recognised as one of the most established and respected commercial-vehicle manufacturers in China, underpinned through Joint Ventures with both Ford and Isuzu on a manufacturing and shared DNA level. These long-standing relationships, both formed in the mid-nineties, ensure that credibility, engineering assurance, and component quality are shared values across the global partnerships.

At a plant level, JMC is recognised as a National High-Tech Enterprise at source, with CNAS-certified labs and an Industrial Design Centre. JMC manufactures its own drivetrain, chassis and core components, with the focus being global reliability, lower warranty claims, and consistent durability in harsher working climates.

Ongoing Research and Development includes heat and dust testing, as well as full-track endurance validation, ensuring that every JMC vehicle is tailored for markets like South Africa from a climate and on-road / offroad perspective. In terms of ongoing innovation, JMC is well positioned to introduce new-energy derivatives, including mild-hybrid and battery-electric offerings, to various markets globally.

JMC is a global powerhouse, backed by 34 000 employees and selling approximately half a million cars annually across the globe, all equating to a revenue base of approximately R325-billion in 2024 alone – making this brand easily-poised to compete with locally-established Light Commercial Vehicle players, some of which share similar intrinsic DNA.

The reintroduction of the brand locally includes a plan to roll out 40 JMC dealerships nationwide by 2026, with showrooms receiving the current-generation JMC Vigus Single Cab and Double Cab ranges this week.

The 2025 Vigus model range lands with two powertrains on offer, focused on both work and lifestyle. Single Cab buyers can expect a 2.4 Puma Turbodiesel with outputs of 103kW and 310Nm, making for low-rev pulling power and ideal for load-carrying agriculture and site work, alongside various possible rural applications. A robust and durable five-speed manual gearbox ensures best economical delivery of these applications.

Double Cab buyers, who also get the choice of 4×2 or 4×4 derivatives, find power to wheels courtesy of a 2.0 Puma Turbodiesel capable of 104kW and a meatier 350Nm. Performance is more responsive in this iteration, with the manufacturing heritage partnerships more evident in drivetrain and feel with this offering. Doing duty on the transmission front is a smooth and responsive eight-speed auto, making this the choice for daily commuting, or fleet comfort, or that weekend lifestyle offering.

Under the skin the current-generation Vigus offers a durable independent front suspension and high-strength chassis, exemplary offroad capability in the 4×4 Double Cab, load carrying capability of close to a ton in both body guises (making the Single Cab an excellent choice for the commercial sector), an impressive braked-towing capacity of 2000kg, and generous all-round proportions including a Double Cab measuring 5305mm x 1905mm x 1835mm. Complementing this in terms of capability is a Double wishbone spiral-spring independent suspension up front, with a leaf-spring non-independent suspension at the rear.

Inside the cabin, the Vigus brings a blend of rugged practicality and everyday usability. Depending on the model, buyers can look forward to specification including a 9.7-inch Touchscreen infotainment system, reverse camera and rear parking sensors, and modern interior material finishes. From a design standpoint, buyers will enjoy an ergonomic cabin layout with a keen focus on driver-focused control placement.

Buyers will enjoy peace of mind through a 5-year/100 000km warranty; 3-year/50 000km service plan on Double Cab derivates (optional service plans on Single Cab models); 5-year roadside assistance across the range; and guaranteed parts availability backed by Salvador Caetano’s national JMC distribution network.

“The decision for Salvador Caetano to partner with JMC locally was a strategic and forward-looking one,” says Leslie Ramsoomar, Managing Director at Salvador Caetano South Africa. “JMC aligns with Salvador Caetano’s vision of offering reliable, high-quality, future-ready mobility solutions in markets where customers demand both value and dependability”.

As a global automotive group with more than 75 years of experience and operations in 37 countries, Salvador Caetano saw in JMC the opportunity to partner with a stable OEM with proven global partnerships and a strong commercial vehicle DNA, scalable manufacturing capacity and consistent product quality, and technology pathways aligned to the future of mobility.

“The JMC brand is one that South Africans recognise and trust, with the reintroduction of the Vigus certainly making for an exciting value proposition. From a price-positioning point of view we are targeting becoming one of the most affordable and purpose-built bakkies in South Africa,” says Ramsoomar. “This exciting partnership between Salvador Caetano and JMC will see a strengthened JMC national dealer network matched to an enhanced aftersales offering. JMC is back and here to stay, and we look forward to demonstrating this to every single new customer we attract at price points that simply cannot be ignored”.

The Vigus is a bakkie built for long days, tough conditions, and real-world South African demands. Whether on the worksite, farm, highway, or the occasional weekend gravel track, this latest offering in the local pick-up landscape is backed and shaped by South African consumer needs.

With a relevant model line-up, strong importer backing, competitive pricing, comprehensive specifications and service plans, and a robust warranty, the Vigus is positioned to deliver more value per rand than ever before, marking the beginning of a renewed growth phase for the brand in South Africa. Through a focus on quality, capability, and value, JMC is ready to reclaim its space in the bakkie segment.
