The BMW X3 – this year’s South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ) South African Car of the Year winner – exemplifies high performance and innovation. Old Mutual Insure brings these same values to its four-year sponsorship of the prestigious awards.

“It’s fitting that this year’s winner shares our approach to excellence – delivering the ultimate experience,” says Presodini Naicker, Old Mutual Insure Executive of Marketing and Communication.

The independently adjudicated awards, celebrating their  40th anniversary this year, are judged by South Africa’s leading motoring journalists and showcase the best vehicles in the country’s automotive sector.

“The automotive industry is vital to South Africa’s economy, accounting for more than 100,000 jobs. By supporting these awards, we’re helping to strengthen this crucial sector,” says Naicker.

Built at BMW’s Rosslyn plant in Tshwane, the latest X3 demonstrates local manufacturing excellence. The German SUV impressed judges with its refinement, design, advanced digital features, and exceptional value for money.

BMW holds the record for the most South African Car of the Year titles, with wins dating back to 1988 when the 735i claimed the honour. This marks the first time the X3 nameplate has received the accolade.

This year also sees increased competition from Chinese manufacturers, providing South African consumers with more affordable options and adding vibrancy to the vehicle lineup.

Old Mutual Insure’s sponsorship enabled the SAGMJ to conduct two rigorous testing days in March, evaluating several vehicles.

Mabuyane Mabuza, Chairperson of the SAGMJ, congratulated all winners and entrants, highlighting the strong representation of South Africa’s diverse market. “Each year brings better technology, improved quality, and a stronger focus on safety, demonstrating manufacturers’ commitment to safer roads”.

Naicker adds: “It’s important to us that the winners exhibited excellent safety features. We see the devastating effects of accidents, especially fatal injuries, too often in our business, and having such safe vehicles on the winner’s list is a tribute to tireless engineering”,

According to Department of Transport statistics, 1,427 road deaths occurred during the most recent festive season, with reckless driving and speeding causing over 80% of crashes.

Category Winners:

Premium: BMW X3 – The overall Car of the Year winner combines local manufacturing pride with world-class engineering.

Budget: Suzuki Swift – The fourth-generation B-segment hatchback prioritises safety with six airbags standard across the range.

Performance: BMW M5 – The hybrid G90 impressed with its environmental credentials, blistering acceleration, and revamped cabin. The M5 also won the special Jurors’ Choice award.

Family: Volkswagen Tiguan – The third-generation model features updated styling, a well-appointed cabin, and segment-rare amenities including massaging seats.

Executive: BMW G60 5 Series – Led its class with refined dynamics, a luxurious interior, and a strong value proposition.

Adventure Utility: Toyota Land Cruiser Prado – The J250 series distinguished itself with retro-inspired design, enhanced comfort, impressive off-road capability, and a robust powertrain.

“South Africa’s roads are home to world-class vehicles, and we’re honoured to support this celebration of automotive excellence. Congratulations to all winners – we look forward to next year’s competition,” concludes Naicker.
