The 2026 South African Touring Cars (SATC) season got underway at the Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town this past weekend, where TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa (TGRSA) fielded reigning champion Michael van Rooyen alongside newcomer Jason Coetzee in a pair of GR Corollas. The opening round of the season produced a promising start for the team, highlighted by an impressive debut weekend from Coetzee and valuable championship points for Van Rooyen.

Qualifying on Saturday saw the field tightly packed around the 3.267 km Western Cape circuit. Coetzee delivered an excellent performance to secure third place on the grid, immediately putting the GR Corolla in contention for the races ahead. Van Rooyen, meanwhile, qualified fifth fastest after the team battled with a technical issue that had first surfaced during Friday’s practice sessions.

When the lights went out for the first race of the season, Coetzee found himself in the thick of the action. After reacting quickly to an incident off the line, he worked his way forward and settled into a strong rhythm, ultimately crossing the line in second place to claim his first SATC podium in his debut weekend with the team. Van Rooyen, managing the lingering issues with his car, drove a measured race to bring his GR Corolla home in fourth place, securing solid early-season points.

The second race of the weekend produced another determined performance from Coetzee. Starting further back on the grid, he carved his way through the field with a series of decisive moves before once again finishing in second place, completing a remarkable double podium on his SATC debut. Van Rooyen continued to focus on maximising points while managing the car’s limitations, finishing the race in fifth place to add another valuable result to his tally.

For Coetzee, the Killarney weekend represented an encouraging introduction to the premier touring car category in South Africa. “It was a really encouraging first weekend for me in the SATC car,” said Coetzee. “We made a big setup change on Friday, and that really helped the car come alive. Before that we had quite a few challenges with the setup and a couple of small issues, so to qualify third was a good result for us. In Race 1 I had to react quickly when Julian stalled on the grid, which put me on the back foot a bit, but I managed to work my way forward and finish second. In Race 2 we started further back and had to fight our way through the field again. We didn’t quite have the outright pace of the leaders, but to come away with two second places in my first SATC weekend is something I’m very happy with. The team worked incredibly hard all weekend, and I’m excited about what we can achieve together going forward.”

Coetzee’s performance also underlines the effectiveness of the TGRSA driver development programme. The young driver dominated the GR86 Development Academy championship in 2025 before graduating to SATC this season, providing a clear example of how the pathway created by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa allows emerging talent to progress through the ranks of national motorsport.

For defending champion Van Rooyen, the opening round became a weekend of damage limitation after the team discovered a technical issue during practice. “We discovered an issue during practice, and the team worked late on Friday night trying to get it sorted,” said van Rooyen. “They definitely made progress before qualifying, but the car still wasn’t quite where we wanted it to be. Because of that, the focus for the weekend was really just to circulate and collect as many points as possible. I had a few moments defending my position during the races, but overall it was about managing the situation and bringing the car home. The team believes they have identified the problem, so I’m confident we’ll have it sorted before the next round.”

With the first round now complete, TGRSA leaves Killarney with strong early-season momentum. Coetzee’s double podium highlights the potential of the team’s newest driver, while Van Rooyen’s measured approach ensured valuable points as he begins the defence of his SATC title. The championship now moves to Red Star Raceway for Round 2 of the season on 18 April 2026, where the team will be aiming to build on their solid start to the year.
