  • All-new double-cab bakkie to debut with a segment-first 2.5-litre turbodiesel plug-in hybrid powertrain.
  • Engineered on Chery’s Kaitan ladder-frame chassis with a targeted 1,000 kg payload and 3,500 kg towing capacity.
  • Production model to feature triple-locking differentials and a low-range transfer case for serious off-road capability.

Chery South Africa has confirmed the upcoming global introduction of an all-new double-cab bakkie, marking the brand’s entry into one of the most competitive international vehicle segments.

Known internally as the KP31, the new model is scheduled to arrive in late 2026 or early 2027 and will debut with a segment-first diesel plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. The advanced system combines a 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine with electric drive technology, engineered to deliver strong torque, improved efficiency and reduced noise and vibration.

Underpinned by the Kaitan ladder-frame chassis, a new-generation platform developed to support internal combustion, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains. The architecture has been engineered to prioritise structural strength, as well as durability and versatility.

In line with segment expectations, the KP31 will target a payload of 1,000 kg and a braked towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg. The rear load bin has been designed to maximise usable space with minimal wheel arch intrusion and will support cab-chassis applications.

Capability remains central to the KP31’s development. The production-ready model will feature front, centre and rear locking differentials, a low-range gearbox and dedicated off-road driving modes. A tight-turn assist function has also been previewed, designed to enhance manoeuvrability in demanding terrain.

Additional functional elements include underbody protection, integrated recovery points and a raised air intake, further reinforcing the vehicle’s off-road capability. Following the introduction of the diesel plug-in hybrid derivative, Chery will expand the range with a petrol-powered plug-in hybrid variant. The production model will be unveiled in full in due course, with final specifications and further details to be confirmed closer to launch.

“The KP31 marks an important step in Chery’s global product expansion strategy. The pick-up segment is a core category in many markets, and this model has been developed to meet the high standards customers expect in terms of durability, versatility and capability,” commented Verene Petersen, National Marketing Manager at Chery South Africa.

“The introduction of a diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain reflects Chery’s ongoing commitment to advancing new-energy technologies across multiple vehicle segments. We look forward to sharing further details as we move closer to the model’s official launch.”
