  • New Core trim has been added to the J5 lineup, offering a more accessible entry point without compromising on essential features.
  • Powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the Core retains the J5’s strong spec list, including key safety systems, modern tech, and practical everyday usability.
  • Priced at R339,900, the Core is backed by JAECOO’s extensive after-sales package, including a five-year/150,000 km warranty and 10-year/1,000,000 km engine warranty.

JAECOO South Africa has expanded the J5 range with the arrival of the new Core trim, a value-focused entry point designed to broaden the brand’s appeal without compromising on capability or quality.

Like the other J5 variants, the Core is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine developing 115 kW and 230 N.m of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT), with three driving modes available (Eco, Normal, and Sport).

Fuel consumption remains unchanged, with a claimed 7.5L/100 km on the combined cycle. This gives the J5 Core a theoretical driving range of around 680 km between fill-ups. “The J5 Core offers an accessible gateway into the JAECOO brand for drivers seeking uncomplicated motoring with a modern, adventurous edge,” said Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for OMODA & JAECOO South Africa.

A MacPherson strut front suspension and multilink rear setup provide the J5 with a composed, controlled ride. Stopping power is supplied by ventilated front disc brakes and rear disc brakes, ensuring confident stopping power.

Despite its entry-level positioning, the Core maintains the J5’s premium and modern aesthetic. Standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers. Convenience features include power-adjustable side mirrors, a heated rear window, and rear parking sensors.

Practicality remains a strong point, with 480 litres of luggage capacity—expanding to 1,284 litres with the 60:40 split folding rear seats stowed away—and a 750 kg towing capacity.

Inside, the Core offers a premium yet functional cabin with black cloth upholstery, six-way driver and four-way passenger seat adjustment, and automatic climate control. A nine-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay provides modern connectivity, complemented by an eight-inch digital driver’s display. USB and USB Type-C ports in the front row ensure convenient device charging, making the Core an appealing choice for buyers seeking up-to-date technology and everyday comfort at an accessible price point.

The J5 Core retains the brand’s focus on safety with an extensive list of standard systems, including:

  • Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS)
  • Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD)
  • Electronic Stability Programme (ESP)
  • Traction Control
  •  Brake Assist
  • Roll Stability Control
  • Hill Descent Control
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Dual Front Airbags
  • ISOFIX attachments
  • Secondary Collision Mitigation Multi-Collision Brake (MCB)

“The Core trim allows us to offer a more attainable option within the J5 lineup without compromising the fundamental strengths of the model,” added Gahagan. “Our intention was to create a variant that prioritises practicality and value while still aligning with the broader JAECOO design and engineering philosophy. The new Core trim meets the needs of customers who want a well-equipped compact SUV at an accessible price point.”

As with all OMODA and JAECOO products, the J5 Core is backed by an extensive after-sales package. This includes a two-year/30,000 km service plan, five-year/150,000 km factory warranty, 10-year/1 million km engine warranty, and five-year/unlimited km roadside assistance.
